Each week, I meet with business owners over a cup of tea and discuss things they are having trouble with on their websites. Editing the menu in WordPress has come up a few times, so I thought I’d share it with you. So, people create a page, but then it doesn’t show up in the menu on the top of the site. There’s a quick little step you have to take to add the page to the menu in most cases.
I’ve put together a quick tutorial showing the steps to editing your menu in WordPress.
How to Add Pages to Your WordPress Menu
- Log into your WordPress dashboard by going to yourdomain.com/wp-admin and entering your username and password.
- Navigate to Appearance → Menus in the left sidebar of your dashboard.
- Select the menu you want to edit from the dropdown at the top of the page. If you haven’t created a menu yet, click “create a new menu” and give it a name.
- Find the pages you want to add in the left panel. You’ll see a list of your published pages with checkboxes next to them.
- Check the boxes next to the pages you want to add to your menu.
- Click “Add to Menu” and your selected pages will appear in the menu structure on the right.
- Arrange your menu items by dragging and dropping them into your preferred order. You can also create dropdown submenus by dragging items slightly to the right beneath a parent item.
- Save your menu by clicking the “Save Menu” button.
- Make sure your menu is assigned to the correct location. At the bottom of the menu editor, check the box for “Primary Menu” or “Header Menu” (depending on your theme).
